balancing the budget

What's the best way to counter several days in a row of partying hard and spending far too much money on food, drink and various social events?

You guessed it: Instant Ramen. Force yourself to deal with this crap for three days in a row and you can totally balance out the previous week's worth of indulging (at only 80 yen a bag -- roughly 68 cents -- it's quite a steal). In fact, if you can find some half-decent flavors (pictured above: Nissin Chicken Ramen), it's really not all that horrible.

Cooking is overrated. Seriously. Of course, I'd say that because I can't cook at all.

I like Ramen noodle soup. I can get 10 packages for $.85 for the chicken flavor. Beef Flavor, which is also very good is like 12 for $1.00 or something.

Yah, Peter B was telling me about how cheap ramen is in America. Unbelievable. But is it any good? The only instant ramen I remember from the U.S. tasted like utter crap. Not that this stuff is much better, but it's definitely higher up on the edibility meter than the stuff I've had back home.

Yeah, all you can get in the US is the super anti-deluxe nasty no-flavor dried starchpaste ramen. The stuff in Japan is cheap AND edible, which puts it in the lead in my book.

Yeah the one we have here is Maruchan Ramen Noodle soup. Its the one that looks like a brick and you throw it into some boiling water, and then open the season pack, and you get chicken flavored ramen noodle soup. I actually like it alot.

I wonder if anyone else just eats the ramen brick? This is the type where the flavoring is already encrusted onto the noodles, obviously. Yuki eats that stuff like a cow eats grass.

there's this one particular brand of HK instant noodles that can be eaten as a dry snackfood. You crunch the noddles into tiny pieces, then pour the MSG powder into the bag, and enjoy.

i tend to go to the asian grocery and buy import ramen.

there's a taiwanese brand called unif-100 that i like quite a little bit.

it's more expensive.. but it still costs like next to nothing.

I like maruchan as well.. Their chicken flavor cup noodle anyways. Liked it more than Nissin's.

I used to eat the ramen brick occasionally ^^. I would crush it up beforehand, then put it into one of those resealable bags and have it as a snack.

I'm living on the cheap too but I can cook a little. I go to Niku no Hanamasa and get boneless chicken breasts, 4 for 400yen. When I get home I cut each one into bite size pieces and wrap it in saran wrap (got that idea from Kiryu).

I make some flavored rice (put rice in rice maker, add some seasonings) I make 4 cups of rice or about 8 servings. Same way, wrap each single serving in saran wrap. Put it all in the freezer.

Now, anytime I'm hungry I can cook the chicken (defrost one or usually I put one in the fridge) and I can nuke the rice. Takes max 10 minutes.

Sure it's a lot more work I guess but it's better than eating instant ramen every day and it's probably only about 140yen per meal.

In France we have those ramen bricks with oil and flavor included, the low ones goes for 0.30 Eurocents in the chinese shops.
Used to eat that daily during students days.
