fun with magnets

Right now, McDonald's is running a Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) Happy Set (Happy Meal) campaign in Japan, where you can get one of four Astro Boy toys for some ridiculously cheap price when you buy a Happy Set. Since I'm a closet Astro Boy freak, I went and had breakfast there today so I could nab the coolest of the four available toys:

As you can see, Astro Boy is pulling some sort of huge rocket out of the ground while his little sister Uran-chan looks on. The wacky thing is -- he's actually suspended in mid-air! The big metal thingy behind him actually houses a magnet that's pulling him away from the rocket and into the air. Is that cool or what? McDonald's didn't have stuff like this when I was a kid!

What are you talking about? Did you miss the old Super Mario 3 happy meal toys?

Back-flipping goombas!!!

Hah! I guess I did. Did they look good or were they all ugly and Americanized?

Hmmm.

Well the goomba had to be the best out of the lot. I still see it turn up today in the oddest of places. I could've sworn I saw it in some art gallery as part of a collage. It's the perfect desktop companion really.

The other 3 were a hopping Koopa Paratroopa and a "flying" Racoon Mario. Those 2 (especially the Koopa) were molded pretty good. The Koopa was way better as it had a hose attached to a bulb that one could squeeze to initiate the hop. Mario was a shoddy suction cup/spring loaded thing that never worked right.

The last toy was Luigi perched on a gliding cloud. You pull it back and it would run around spinning all over the place. Neat but definitely the ugliest of the set.

Funny how Luigi felt like an afterthought....again!
